Errors usually occur on a resume due to a lack of proofreading or simply not knowing how to format the document. However, some job seekers decide to put ridiculous statements on a resume that defy logic. Although it's important to have a memorable resume, some applicants take that concept a bit too far. The following statements were actually found on submitted resumes.
All of these statements came from a Reddit thread asking people in HR about a memorable resume or job application they saw during their day-to-day duties. These hilarious ways to capture someone's attention should make you laugh.
1. Got Locked Up
An interviewer asked a potential employee to fill out an application because he had no resume. The person's reason for leaving his one and only previous job was jail time. The applicant wrote "Got locked up" on the application.
2. Unprofessional Email Addresses
Make sure you have a professional email address as a form of contact. Check out the following actual email handles: krystal_meth@, babykiller69@ and 420bluntbro@. The "babykiller69" address, believe it or not, was for a child care position.
3. How Not to Use Your Network
Someone actually wrote, "‘None of my references really like me, so please don't believe what they say." This memorable resume probably did not last long.
4. Proofread, Proofread, Proofread
No one can undersell the importance of proofreading your vital document. One memorable resume read, "Grate communication and atention to details." This potential employee either did not have a spellchecker or failed to have someone read over his copy. If spelling is not your strong point, find someone who can catch these errors before they cost you a job.
The following statement is another reason why spelling is important: "Position listed as cash year, which is just slightly better than night stalker." The person meant to write "cashier" and "stocker" instead of "cash year" and "stalker." In this case, a spellchecker may not help because cash, year and stalker are actual words.
5. Big Cats?
One person listed "cougars" as one of his interests. The job was for tending a bar, not for a zookeeper.
6. Short and Sweet
Ridiculous statements leave an impression due to their concise nature and not just because they sound less than exemplary. Take, for example, someone named Mike who wrote his resume in just three sentences and one line of text: "My name is Mike and I’d like a job. Here is my phone number. Thanks."
7. Being Too Honest
Even though employment experts encourage job seekers to be honest, this person was a bit too honest. The applicant wrote, "My parents are rich, and I thought I could live for free off them for a few more years. Turns out I was wrong. Now I need to get a job and move out. I’m lazy though."
