Must pass pre-employment physical upon hireMonterey Peninsula Unified Nutrition Services Assistant I NUTRITION SERVICES ASSISTANT I CLASSIFICATION: Classified Employee SALARY LEVEL: Range 12, Classified Salary Schedule WORK YEAR: 182 Days (10 months) JOB DEFINITION: Under general direction by the Director of Nutrition Services and the School Principal or Site Administrator, and with direct leadership and direction from the Nutrition Services Manager, provides routine assistance in the preparation, packaging, and serving of food and beverages, sanitation, and/or kitchen maintenance. Performs food service, sanitation, and kitchen maintenance activities. Participates in the service of food. Performs other job related duties as assigned by supervisor. SUPERVISOR(S): Director of Nutrition Services School Principal QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements listed on the job description are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: The following is a list of duties that are representative of the position and include but are not limited to: Essential Duties: - Assists with the preparation of food items by slicing, chopping, grating, cleaning, mixing, etc. - Serves food following established food portion control standards - Maintains the operational readiness of facilities and equipment; sets up counters, serving lines and serving utensils - Maintains safe and sanitary conditions in cooking, serving and general work areas; cleans facilities and equipment, washes, sanitizes, and stores pots, pans, and kitchen utensils. Removes refuse from specified areas - Cleans work and dining areas and furnishings - Assists in stocking and storing food service items. Keeps records pertaining to daily operations, food production, consumption and inventory - Operates a variety of kitchen equipment such as ovens, grills, toasters, fryers, mixers, etc. - Operate standard office machines including computer - Assume the responsibility for collecting money and tickets received from the sale of food and beverages checking totals against food sold; collect outstanding student balances - May operate cash register or adding machine Other Related Duties: - May prepare tickets for students - Attend meetings related to assignment - Participates in available training to meet new safety and/or technology standards - Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: 1. Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position under sometimes stressful conditions 2. Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions 3. Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone, computer, calculator, and office or kitchen equipment at required speed and accuracy 4. Vision sufficient to read handwritten and printed materials on labels, manuals, safety materials, the display screen of various office or kitchen equipment and machines, etc. 5. Hearing sufficient to communicate in person and hold telephone conversations in normal range (approximately 60 decibels) 6. Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distances on the telephone and addressing groups 7. Physical agility to sit, stand, kneel, walk, push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead 8. Physical stamina sufficient to sustain moderate to heavy physical labor for up to 8 hours, sit, stand, and/or walk for prolonged periods of time, or work in confined spaces 9. Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, district, school site to site) for sustained periods of time on hard flooring, climb slopes, stairs, ramps, and to respond to emergency situations 10. Physical strength sufficient to lift and/or carry 50 or more pounds of materials or supplies frequently and 80 pounds occasionally with assistance; push and/or pull a variety of supplies and equipment weighing 80 or more pounds occasionally with assistance. Requires daily handling and lifting of pots, pans, and cases of food; shared lifting of trash cans and cases of food weighing up to 50 lbs. 11. Typically indoor work environment; may require some limited exposure to outdoor environment in order to assist with loading or unloading of supplies. May be exposed to extreme atmospheric and/or substance temperatures 12. Work with chemical agents in a safe and effective manner without allergic reaction 13. Physical tolerance to be exposed to dust, specific agents/chemicals, cleaners, foul smells 14. Work in high noise level areas 15. May have to work around power machinery capable of causing severe injury and near hazardous materials as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: - A pre-employment physical is a requirement of the candidate selection process for this position Education: - A high school diploma or GED equivalency sufficient to assure the ability to read and write English and to perform mathematical calculations at the level required for successful job performance Experience: - Basic record keeping - Cash transactions - Any food service preparation, customer service, and/or kitchen equipment maintenance Licenses and Certificates: - Possession of a valid California driver's license (as appropriate to the assignment) - A pre-employment physical is a requirement of the candidate selection process for this position - Safe Food Handling and Sanitation course within 90 days of employment - First Aid (including the Heimlich Maneuver) and CPR within 90 days of employment REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Continued): Knowledge of: - Working knowledge of food preparation methods and portion control standards - General practices and methods for the receipt and accounting of money - Related sanitation regulations and practices - Kitchen methods, machines, and utensils used in cafeterias Ability to: - Assist in preparing and serving food - Operate food service equipment, appliances, and kitchen utensils - Operate standard office machines including computer - Count cash and tickets rapidly and accurately - Keep records on food usage and prepare simple reports - Work in irritating environments and adverse temperature conditions - Lift, transport, and stock food service supplies, materials, and equipment - Understand and carry out assigned work with minimal supervision - Learn, plan, formulate and execute federal, state, district, and departmental policies, procedures and directives, in accordance with assigned duties - Read, understand, interpret, and follow laws, rules, regulations, processes, policies, and methods of the office, the District, and the State of California - Use initiative and judgment in discussing problems with the public and district staff, involving office practices and policies - Establish and maintain co-operative relationships with those contacted during the performance of required duties, including students, school personnel, parents, vendors, co-workers, and the community - Perform under demanding and varied work schedule with ability to remain flexible and focused during interruptions and distractions - Communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing - Understand and be sensitive to those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds - Understand and follow oral and written directions - Determine and meet schedules and time lines - Make simple mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy - Maintain accurate and neat records and reports - Compose letters or reports from oral and written instructions - Maintain regular attendance and punctuality DESIR
